The mission of the Diego Martin Pan Institute (DMPI) located in Diego Martin, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and with offices in Diego Martin and Chicago, Illinois, USA, is to preserve and celebrate the culture, history and performance of steel pan, and also calypso, throughout the world.
The detailed mission statement of the DMPI is:
- To offer seminars and performances by the living legends of steel pan and calypso (kaiso).
- To exhibit and study the latest technical developments in pan.
- To provide a performance venue welcoming foreigners and promoting a deep understanding of Trinidadian culture and history.
- To preserve the legacy of Aldwin Roberts, the Grandmaster of Calypso and whose music was highly instrumental in the development of pan, and to honor him annually with a live presentation of his music.
- To preserve the legacy of Bertie Marshall, the Prince of Pan, and a significant figure in the founding and development of the art form.
- To promote an understanding of the Caribbean region as a unique cultural crossroads in world history and to learn from this cultural melting pot.
- To collect and preserve the history of pan and calypso.
- To offer master classes at the DMPI with steel pan greats.
- To provide a learning center and accommodations for international students of pan and calypso.
